Pathways to Success

Pathways to Success:
Needs and Resources Assessment

The first stage of the Pathways to Success project is to perform a needs and resources assessment within their communities. The purpose of this assessment is to gather data about the unique needs of and resources available to expectant and parenting young people in the community. These data will be synthesized to determine where there are gaps and where new formal and informal linkages in the community can be established. These findings will inform program development to reach the goals that have been set forth by the Pathways to Success initiative.

The needs and resources assessment is comprised of three steps that all serve different purposes to best inform community programming. Each step also has its own set of tools that help guide and document discussions and data being collected.

Pathways to Success: Needs and Resources Assessment Steps 1-3

Step 1: Community Partner Brainstorm

The main goals of the Community Partner Brainstorm are to define the local target group for the Pathways to Success project, begin discussions on the needs of and resources available to expectant and parenting young people, and build or strengthen relationships with community partners.

Step 2: Key Informant Interviews

The larger community now becomes involved through Key Informant Interviews with the service providers that were identified in step one. These interviews will gather information about organizations working with expectant and parenting young people in the community. This is also an opportunity to begin building or strengthening relationships with organizations in the community. These important connections will help achieve the goals of the Pathways to Success project.

Step 3: Focus Groups

The Focus Groups are designed to hear directly from expectant and parenting young people about what their greatest needs are, what resources they are using to meet these needs, and what resources could be added or changed to better meet their needs. The ACT for Youth Center of Excellence staff will work with each of the Pathways to Success partners to facilitate these focus groups. The information gathered during this needs and resources assessment process will inform action planning for the next phase of the Pathways to Success project.
