Pathways to Success

Rochester Pathways to Success Initiative

Monroe Community College (Damon City Campus)

Monroe Community College (MCC) is a dynamic learning community where access, excellence, and leadership are the College's hallmarks. Our mission is to educate and prepare diverse learners to achieve scholarly, professional, and individual success within a local and global context. The College serves as a catalyst for innovation, economic development, lifelong learning, and civic engagement.

The Pathways to Success program presents a good fit for MCC because on a daily basis we are directly connected to the population that the program intends to support. The college environment has always been open to providing unique ways to support our students above and beyond their educational needs. Under the Pathways to Success initiative, our expectant and parenting students will now be able to become more educated about the many external program support systems readily available to them within the Rochester community. Many students struggle to balance school, work, and home, leaving them with a very limited amount of time to search for assistance when needed. Students can now get referrals to community agencies without leaving the college campus.

Because Rochester is a resourceful community, there are many agencies readily available to offer assistance to expectant and/or parenting young adults; however, we find that many of these young adults know very little about the services in the community. The Pathways to Success program will help to build stronger linkages between our students in need and the support systems within the Rochester community. We will increase awareness of and access to community resources among our expectant and parenting students by offering opportunities to connect with community agencies during on-campus outreach events as well as enrichment and educational workshops. Also, it is our hope to create positive impact within this population by providing them with the necessary tools to balance life both academically and socially so that graduation is the goal along with strengthening families.

Rochester City School District

Pathways to Success aims to create and sustain supportive systems that help expectant and parenting teens and young adults travel pathways to success through health, education, self-sufficiency, and strong families. This program is federally funded by the Office of Adolescent Health (OAH). The Rochester City School District is partnered with Monroe Community College to work together in the Rochester community, along with health and human service providers, to ensure students have the support they need to be successful academically and as parents and providers for their families.

The Pathways to Success initiative has four essential components:

  • Find and engage expectant and parenting students
  • Assess their risks and assets regarding their health, education, and family functioning
  • Ensure linkages and follow-up for students and their young families to community resources
  • Increase awareness of available supports and resources
The goal of the program is to ensure that RCSD teen parents are receiving the supportive services they need so that their families are thriving, ensuring that the teen parents are academically successful, and encouraging them to work with the supports in the local Rochester community for the betterment of their families. This support will include linkages with agencies in the community that serve teen parents, ongoing teen parent workshops, follow-up services to ensure linkages are successful, and tracking of results over the programming period.
