PREP: Adult Preparation Programming
In addition to implementing evidence-based programs (EBP) in sexual health, PREP providers in New York State are required to educate youth on at least three adulthood preparation subjects (APS). APS activities can be included in the context of the selected EBP or be implemented in addition to the provision of EBPs. PREP providers select three of the following APS areas for programming:
- Healthy relationships, such as positive self-esteem and relationship dynamics, friendships, dating, romantic involvement, marriage, and family interactions
- Adolescent development, such as the development of healthy attitudes and values about adolescent growth and development, body image, racial and ethnic diversity, and related subjects
- Financial literacy
- Parent-child communication
- Educational and career success, such as developing skills for employment preparation, job seeking, independent living, financial self-sufficiency, and work-place productivity
- Healthy life skills, such as goal-setting, decision making, negotiation, communication and interpersonal skills, and stress management
ACT for Youth has gathered resources for each of these topic areas in the Prep for Adulthood Activity Toolkit. This Toolkit for youth development professionals and program planners offers a curated collection of APS activities and curricula aimed at supporting the transition to adulthood.
